I am currently teaching (May through June 2010) at Disney Feature Animation in Burbank Ca. with some amazing artists. Teaching here is one of my favorite teaching gigs, I have always enjoyed working with these great artists.

Remembering Norm Schureman

Well once again in too short of a time, we have lost another great teacher at Art Center to senseless violence. It was a mere 14 years ago that I got the jaw-dropping news that our beloved Dwight Harmon was killed by a couple of thugs while Dwight walked in the park after teaching his class at ACCD. He was beaten to death by two young predators that saw Dwight as an easy mark or maybe it was timing or opportunity. I don't know. How can we know, those of us that lead "normal" lives. Lives with purpose and meaning unlike so many lost and cowardly people among us. So, how can we know what it takes to be so cruel. I got the news of Norm's tragic death in an email from one of my own ACCD students, Rebecca Blake, the day after the shooting that took Norm's life. I stared at her words, reading in between the lines I felt her pain as she let me know the horrible news. Unlike at the time of Dwight's death, news was instantly available throughout the internet. It was fast but it was widely varied. A lot of it reminded me of the child's game of "Telephone". So much of what I read on idiotic BLOGS were the usual inane people assuming things beyond their knowledge and I read disturbing suppositions about the event and even about Norm himself. It reminded me of the multitudes of cowards behind anonymous, often hate-filled spewings. So many people nowadays hide behind anonymity.
But through all of the cybergarbage,the one fact was irrefutable, Norm was no longer with us. I lost a friend and colleague that Saturday night, I will miss the talks about future plans to join forces and create a class that combined my Imaginatomy class with his VisCom/drawing class. It would be a uberclass. But as with many things that get put on the shelf, time ran out. As a matter of fact it is in part because of Norm and his trust in my knowledge that I created IMAGINATOMY. It's a long story but it was over a decade ago that Norm started sending his students over to me on a regular basis to help with anatomical questions that I could help with. He was brilliant and the sign of true brilliance is knowing that you don't know everything. Anyway, I figure, why not create a class to answer those questions about made up beasts and their anatomy? Voila, Imaginatomy was born. I also remember that he always liked my sayings, I often write them for my students on my blackboard. He liked one in particular that I often tell my students, it's about drawing......"To draw is to pull out, to interpret is to put in".
Well Norm, we will miss you and it is with a heavy heart that I bid you a final farewell...or, to be more precise,"Toodle-Loo" as I would say to him in the halls of our ol' school. Toodle-loo Norm, until we meet in heaven. I am now filled with even more passion to teach to my fullest and to try to give more fully in life. Life is good even when it hurts.

I am excited to have finally unveiled these new paintings that I am so proud of. The first two pictures are from the show...the three young ladies served as hostesses. The pictures that follow were from the day before the show. We had about two hundred people there on opening night and many paintings were given nice homes! Rey Bustos

Florence, Italy 2009

I got back from my Florence trip with a group of people that wanted to draw and experience Florence with me. I have to say that the city was more than anything I could have ever dreamed of. Every artist should make the pilgimage to this great city, the birthplace of the Renaissance..or Rinascimento,as they say in Italy. I did demos and talked about anatomy, my area of expertise, and perspective, another one of my loves...Florence is the birthplace of mathematical perspective...yes, there is brilliance all around you literally everywhere in this amazing city. We all stayed at the Bernini Palace Hotel right by the Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi Gallery...we were right in the middle of everything and everything seemed to be at arms length!

The Getty Hour with Rey Bustos

I will be doing what is called the "Getty Hour" four times in 2007. They are on the first and third Fridays of each month at the Getty Center at 1200 Getty Center Drive in L.A. and my gigs are in January on the 5th and the 19th and in February , on the 2nd and the 16th. I will demonstrate my figure drawing methods and talking a wee bit about the importance of anatomical knowledge as a liberating factor in all figurative work in any medium including CGI. The mini classes are from 7-9pm. I hope to see and meet some of you there. Rey Bustos

Rey's Teachers

I have been asked many times who my teachers were. I've had many but if I had to make a list of the most influential teachers as far as art goes, they would all be from Art Center College of Design where I graduated from.
They are:

Burne Hogarth, at first crusty and loud,turned out to be a teddy bear with an amazing amount of knowledge and more amazing stamina. Our 9-4 class was exhausting but he kept going...and going...you get the idea. I taught the same class after his death and made it my own ,that's when I came up with my method of teaching through the ecorche' sculpture.

Vern Wilson. Great drawing teacher, patient and one of the kindest men that I have ever met.

Harry Carmean. The wonderous wizard of drawing. I felt a kinship with his drawing style...you may see evidence of the influence in my drawings.

Mark Strickland. Great intuitive draftsman and all from the heart. Great teacher

Lorrie Madden. Serious and intelligent, I learned so much about drawing from her,a great and dedicated teacher.

Richard Bunkall. He was such a sweet man and a great painter and teacher,he died much too young.

Dwight Harmon. He was so entertaining as a teacher,I really get a lot of my silliness from remembering that you can really be more effective when the students are laughing. He too died too young.

Rey Bustos to Teach at GNOMON!

Yes,it's true,I received the call October 2006 to teach my Ecorche'/Anatomy class there starting in January 2007. For those of you that may not know the Gnomon school,it is a highly respected animation and special effects school here in the SoCal area and I was honored to have been asked. It's now the fifth school/institution that I teach my beloved anatomy class. Gnomon will now join the list of places: Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, L.A. Academy of Figurative Art in Van Nuys, Cal State University,Los Angeles, and Disney Feature Animation in Burbank and now Gnomon in Hollywood. They are hoping to get my IMAGINATOMY class that I created for the entertainment designers at ACCD,which is really getting well known, it's a rare and amazing class. Anyway,I am happy to join with the great folks at Gnomon. I get asked to teach all ever the world but I don't like commuting...so fortunatley I have my home at the hub of everything..yes, life is sweet for Rey...the Anatomy Nut. Some of you may have seen that I now have a section on my site devoted to the younger artists among us. It's a deep honor for me to have influenced many young people,some of them now adults,in teaching not only about art but about life and harmony. "Through the wonder of teaching children art, my art has grown up" I am known to say and I can't express just how much I have learned from sharing the magic of art with the very young. I am constantly being reminded through their eyes that what we do is truly magical and wondrous and we musn't forget that as artists. I'll leave you with another saying of mine: "All children are artists,all great artists are children at heart". Rey Bustos

REY'S ANATOMY...the MANIFESTO

Years ago,before there were computers in every home,yes,there was a time long ago when that was a fact kids...I drew many anatomical drawings with my trusty ball-point pen,EXCALIBER, for my many eager and wide-eyed students. Through the years I compiled a goodly amount of these drawings from my own photos of my favorite models or reference and had them side by side in a four inch thick binder. I simultaniously created my method of making an ecorche' so that my students could learn anatomy through 3D means using polymer clay. It's been an invaluable learning aid and fun to boot. Anywho, along enters this brilliant young man into my life. I met Yariv Newman at the cafeteria at the Art Center College of Design. He told me of magical things. Magical things created with a magic box. He took my humble little drawings,and cross faded them as well as filming my 3D ecorche's and voila,my site became an anatomical Disneyland! Now the magic will jump to dvd form. All anatomical drawings and ecorche's will get labeled and will be available to the public for all of you waiting for more. Yariv will be busy this year(2006) at the fictitious company I call REYCO,where all employees are sweet,happy and good looking and the sun is always rising over the soft rolling hills of MonteREY Hills. We will light up the anatomical education horizon and make all of this timeless and beautiful knowledge accessible and fun to learn from. Thank you for posting the statement about the show. It was the best art opening I have ever been to...I'm glad it was mine! We had a nice jazz combo playing and at one time I was handed the mic and I got the chance to talk about the importance of keeping the classical figure drawing and anatomical traditions of the past alive. I had many of my students,from the little ones shown in the picture on this blog,these kids I teach at their homes,to the "big kids" from Art Center,Cal State L.A., L,A, Academy of Figurative Art and even a few of the Disney pros that I teach were there so it was heartwarming for me to say the least. I am hoping,with Yariv's help,to have DVDs of the anatomical work that you see on my site available to all soon. Keep looking at my site for that bit of magic from the people at "REYCO". Rey just finished up a show at the San Marino Gallery on decemeber 1st
